SOMMELIER TRIP 2008 (17-20 August)
Wines of Germany took five UK sommeliers to Germany this August, alongside a group of international sommeliers from the US and Denmark. Those who came on the trip included Christina Holzer of Petrus, Mark Deamer of The Greyhound, Erica Laler of Maze, Philippe Louiseau of Sake No Hana, and Juan José González Cardenete of Le Pont de la Tour.
The sommeliers, who were joined by Natalie Potts of Wines of Germany, visited a number of wineries during their visit including Weingut Balthasar Ress, Domänenweingut Schloss Schönborn, Weingut Dr. Loosen, Weingut Reichsrat von Buhl, Weingut Christmann, and Weingut Josef Spreitzer. In addition, they had several fantastic dinners with wine producers, including Johannes Selbach of Weingut Selbach-Oster, accompanied by his wines.
Comments from those who were on the trip were very positive:
‘I’ve learned so much about the different regions, producers and styles.’
Christina Holzer, Pétrus
‘All of the producers had very useful and structured information, at justthe level of knowledge I wished for.’
Erica Laler, Maze
‘The trip was a wonderful experience, with great information.’
Juan José González Cardenete, Le Pont de la Tour
‘The wine with food dinners were a particular highlight. They are the best way to understand the relationship between wine and food.' Mark Deamer, The Greyhound

Sommelier Breakfast Tasting Series
Following on from the successes of the first two sommelier breakfast tastings this year, Wines of Germany is running three further events, one in September, October and November in the Le Pont de la Tour cellar. The tastings will be themed as follows: whites wines other than Riesling, red wines and older vintages. Sommeliers who attend two out of the three tastings will be eligible to win a Wines of Germany sponsored place on a WSET advanced course.
The breakfasts, which will run from 10.00am to 11.30 am, allow sommeliers to conveniently taste a small number of wines before the lunchtime service, and provide attendees with an opportunity to meet and network with winemakers, on-trade suppliers and sommeliers alike.
The dates, themes and winemakers confirmed are as follows:
Tuesday 21 October 2008 - German red wines (Tom Gendall from Weingut Keller to attend)
Tuesday 18 November 2008 - Older vintage German wines
Places are limited, so to avoid disappointment please contact Alicia Mellish at Wines of Germany by email: alicia.mellish@phippspr.co.uk or telephone: 020 7759 7405.
