Blog 25 June – Anna German wine was in some illustrious company a couple of weeks ago when we hosted a German wine evening in association with the Wine & Spirit Trade Association for the All-Party Parliamentary Wine & Spirit group. We were really excited about the chance to look around the Palace of Westminster and attendees were very complimentary about the wines that we had to show which included dry and sweet Rieslings, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Dr. Eckhard LĂĽbkemeier, a. i. ChargĂ© d’Affaires at the Embassy introduced the event with Geoffrey Clifton Brown MP, Co-Chair of the group and Steffen Schindler of the Deutsches Weininstitut. We were privileged to be joined by winemakers Gerhard Grans from Grans Fassian, Nik Weis from St UrbansHof showing the 2007 Riesling Kabinett and Georg Kruger-Rumpf showing Kruger Rumpf’s 2007 Silberkapsel Weisser Burgunder. Delicious canapĂ©s provided by the German Embassy’s catering team with German delicacies such as black forest ham rounded off the evening. German’s cooler wine regions are well placed to make wines that are naturally lower in alcohol, without recourse to controversial techniques such as reverse osmosis, so it was good to get these key messages across to MPs for whom these issues are top of mind in today’s climate of reduction of alcohol intake.
